Mr. Kennedy

For 23 years Mr. Kennedy has been mentoring and inspiring the choir students of Powell High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. His influence has created a strong ‘family’ among the past and present members of the Powell High Singers. This film is dedicated to his legacy and is made in gratitude for the many lives he’s touched over the course of his career. His teaching has always been about ‘more than just music.’

Jim Kennedy was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. His father, Glenn Kennedy, was a family physician and his mother, Margaret Kennedy, was very active in the Knoxville area. Both loved music, especially singing hymns in church. Jim has been singing and playing music his entire life, taking piano lessons, playing saxophone in high school and college band, singing in John Ribble’s choir, serving as church choir directors across the area, and teaching in public schools. He has been at Powell High School for 23 years, following Kent Kidd. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a Bachelor’s in Music Education and a Master’s in Choral Conducting. He lives in Maryville on a nine acre farm at the foothills of the Smokies, with his children Krista and Nolan.
